About us

Breivoll Inspection Technologies (BIT) has developed a tool and method to assess the condition of water mains. We cooperate closely with some of Norway’s largest municipalities, research institutions (both Norwegian and from abroad), specialized manufacturers and public policy makers.

As the first company in the world we carry out inspections using a Pipescanner, an inspection device that uses acoustic resonance technology (ART). On the basis of the collected data, a condition report is made and supplied to the customer. Our target groups are public and private administrators and owners of water distribution networks, consultancy companies, contractors and relevant public authorities. We assist asset managers in optimizing maintenance and rehabilitation of water distribution networks, thus contributing to a more effective and efficient management of a vital resource. Our efforts resulted in getting the Norwegian award ’Engineering Achievement of the Year ‘ in 2007.

BIT holds the sole rights to the ART technology through a worldwide exclusive license agreement with Det Norske Veritas (DNV). The licence is confined to pipes in the water and effluent sector, remote heating pipes, irrigation pipes and pipes in power stations and water dam regulation systems. The contract is valid until October 2027.

Our history

In 1992 Det Norske Veritas (DNV) was commissioned by the Norwegian authorities to develop a method that could detect the amount of residual oil in the sunken German warship ’Blücher’. An acoustic method was used for this project. It appeared that the resonance technology that was used also revealed the thickness of the hull’s steel wall as a ‘by-product’.

This has formed the basis for DNV’s major emphasis on the development of inspection technology.
The founder of BIT , John D. Breivoll, has been working with DNV since the late 1980s. When he was introduced to the technology he realized, due to his background in water and effluent management, the great potential in using resonance technology on water pipes. In 1998 he founded Breivoll Inspection Technologies AS (BIT) together with Arne Christian Vangdal as co founder.
